For nearly 30 years, Jim Pence has used music and art to share Jesus Christ in churches, camps, and prisons across the United States.
In less than fifteen minutes, using a 7 foot tall easel and 3 inch lecturer’s chalk, Jim draws a 3×4 foot picture while the audience watches. The climax of most drawings includes an “invisible” picture which is revealed by a black light. Coupled with his strong vocal/musical talents, Jim’s chalk artistry has been used of God to bring many to Christ and to encourage many in the faith.
Jim is also an author, having turned to writing as a helpful means of expression after the death of his infant daughter, Michelle. Seven years later, Dallas Seminary’s Kindred Spirit Magazine published A Road Not Chosen, Jim’s narrative account of his and his wife’s experience. In 2001, Jim broke into book publishing with How to Do Everything with HTML, a book on Web authoring for “non-techies”, published by Osborne/McGraw-Hill. He followed this book the same year with Cascading Style Sheets: A Beginner’s Guide also published by Osborne. A second addition of Jim’s HTML book, re-titled How to Do Everything with HTML & XHTML, was released by Osborne in 2003.
Although writing Web design books was a great experience, Jim’s passion is fiction. He is the author of Blind Sight, a suspense/thriller novel set in the mind-control cults. Blind Sight was published in May of 2003 by Tyndale House and sold over 8,000 copies. His newest novel, The Angel, released in 2006 by Kregel Publications. Set against the backdrop of the euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide movements, The Angel provides a chilling look at what can happen when society no longer values human life. This novel is also a poignant and compelling portrayal of one man’s struggle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
James is a 1978 graduate of Dallas Bible College, and a 2003 graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary. He has been in full-time ministry since 1978, and served fifteen years as pastor of Fellowship Bible Church in Greenville, Texas. In May of 2000 Jim felt that God was calling him to devote more time to prison ministry, so he resigned his pastorate and founded Tuppence Creative Ministries, an organization dedicated to promoting excellence in the arts for the Glory of God. In May of 2005, Jim joined the staff of First Baptist of Dallas, as Discipleship Chaplain for Prison to Praise International, a Bible correspondence ministry that has reached over 5,000 inmates in 650 prisons across 45 states. In December 2006, Jim became the Director of Prison Ministries for First Baptist Dallas,
Jim’s current writing projects include a new novel, Moving Target; a Young Adult novel titled Friendly Revenge; and a sequel to Blind Sight, tentatively titled Ingathering.
Jim and his wife Laurel recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. They live on six acres in the country, east of Greenville, Texas. They have two children: Christopher (17) and Charlene (14).
